Discord Soundboard Setup, Step by Step

Last updated 2026-09-16

Discord has a soundboard built into voice channels, so you do not need a third-party app to play a reaction sound in a call. The catch is that it has tight limits on clip length and file size, and only certain people can add sounds to a server. This guide covers the built-in soundboard first, then the virtual-cable method for anything it cannot do.

What the built-in soundboard can do

The soundboard lives in voice channels. Anyone in the channel can open it from the soundboard button next to the mic controls and play any sound the server has added. Sounds are short by design: Discord caps each clip at a few seconds and a small file size, roughly half a megabyte. That is why reaction stings, boings and air horns work well and a 20-second clip will not upload.

The number of soundboard slots depends on the server’s boost level. A server with no boosts gets a small set of slots, and each boost tier adds more. If you subscribe to Nitro, you can also use sounds from any server you are in, not just the one you are talking in.

Adding a sound to a server

You need the Manage Expressions permission in that server, which owners and most moderator roles have. If you do not see the option below, ask an admin to add the sound or to give your role the permission.

  1. Download the sound from ViralMemesFX. The reaction and prank categories are already trimmed to soundboard length.
  2. In Discord, open the server’s dropdown menu and choose Server Settings.
  3. Click Soundboard in the left column.
  4. Click Upload Sound and pick the MP3. If Discord rejects it for length, trim it in any audio editor to under the limit; Audacity is free and does this in seconds.
  5. Give it a short name and, optionally, an emoji. The name is what people see on the board, so “airhorn” beats “Airhorn Sound Effect Free Download”.
  6. Set the default volume. Around 50 percent is a good starting point; you can always push it louder in the moment.
  7. Save. The sound appears on the board for everyone in that server.

Playing sounds in a call

Join a voice channel, click the soundboard icon in the bottom control bar, and click a sound. It plays to everyone in the channel at the volume you set. Right-click a sound to add it to your favourites so it stays at the top. On mobile, the same button lives in the voice-channel controls.

If people say the sound is too quiet or too loud, it is almost always the per-sound volume set at upload rather than anyone’s mic gain. Change it in Server Settings then Soundboard and hover the sound to edit.

When the built-in soundboard is not enough

Longer clips, hundreds of sounds, or sounds you want to play in a direct-message call all need the older approach: a virtual audio cable plus a desktop soundboard app. The idea is that a soundboard app plays into a virtual “cable” device, and Discord uses that device as its microphone.

  1. Install a virtual audio cable. VB-Cable is the common free choice on Windows and macOS.
  2. Install a desktop soundboard app that lets you choose its output device, and point it at the cable’s input.
  3. In Discord, open User Settings, then Voice & Video, and set Input Device to the cable’s output. Turn off automatic input sensitivity and set the threshold low, or Discord may gate the sound out.
  4. To keep talking as well, most soundboard apps can mix your real microphone into the same cable. Look for a “pass-through” or “monitor mic” option.

This route has no length limit and works in any call, but it takes a few minutes to set up and it is easy to leave Discord pointed at the cable after you are done. If friends suddenly cannot hear you, that is the first thing to check.

Licences and etiquette

Sounds on ViralMemesFX are free-licence clips and reviewed community uploads, so you can add them to a server without asking anyone. Two habits keep a soundboard from becoming a nuisance: leave a gap between sounds so people can actually talk, and never play sounds over someone who is mid-sentence unless the joke is worth it. Server admins can restrict the soundboard per channel if it gets out of hand.

If the sound you want is not in the library, upload it and it will be available to everyone after review.
