OBS Soundboard: Trigger Meme Sounds with Hotkeys

Last updated 2026-09-16

OBS Studio does not ship a soundboard, but it has everything needed to build one: media sources that play a file, per-source hotkeys, and audio monitoring so you hear what your viewers hear. Setting it up takes about ten minutes and needs no plugins. This guide walks through it and then covers the two problems everyone hits, hearing the sound yourself and keeping it from blowing out the mix.

Step one: collect your sounds

Download the clips you want from ViralMemesFX and put them in one folder, for example Documents/OBS Sounds. Keep the file names short and descriptive. A soundboard with eight well-chosen sounds gets used; one with sixty gets ignored. Good starting sets are a win sound, a fail sound, a “bruh” style sting, an air horn, and a crowd reaction.

Step two: add a media source for each sound

  1. In OBS, pick the scene you stream from, or create a scene called “Sounds” and add it as a nested scene in every stream scene so the sounds work everywhere.
  2. Click the + under Sources and choose Media Source. Name it after the sound.
  3. Click Browse and choose the MP3. Leave Local File ticked.
  4. Untick Restart playback when source becomes active and tick Close file when inactive if you have many sounds; it saves memory.
  5. Click OK. The source is added but plays nothing until triggered.

Repeat for each sound. Media sources have no video, so they do not affect the picture.

Step three: bind the hotkeys

  1. Open Settings, then Hotkeys.
  2. Scroll to the section named after your media source. Each one has a Restart action.
  3. Click the field next to Restart and press the key combination you want. Use combinations you will not hit by accident while playing, such as Ctrl plus a numpad key, or a dedicated macro pad or stream deck.
  4. Click Apply.

Pressing the hotkey now restarts the media source from the beginning, which plays the sound once. Pressing it again mid-clip restarts it, which is usually what you want for a rapid-fire meme.

Step four: hear the sounds yourself

By default OBS sends media sources to the stream but not to your headphones, so you will trigger a sound and hear nothing. Fix it with monitoring.

  1. Click the gear icon in the Audio Mixer and choose Advanced Audio Properties.
  2. For each sound source, set Audio Monitoring to Monitor and Output.
  3. In Settings, then Audio, set Monitoring Device to your headphones.

Now the sound plays to you and to the stream at the same time. If you also use a voice chat app on the same PC, make sure the monitoring device is not the virtual device your chat app uses as a mic, or your friends will hear every sound twice.

Step five: set the levels

Meme sounds are mastered loud. Left at full gain they will spike over your voice and can trigger clipping on the stream. Two rules keep it clean.

Your mic should sit around the middle of the meter while you talk, and a sound should peak just above it, not bury it. Watch the meters during a test recording rather than trusting your headphones.

Nested scene trick

If you added the media sources directly to one scene, they only work in that scene. To make them global, put them in a scene called “Sounds” and add that scene as a source in every stream scene. The hotkeys still work because they are bound to the source, not the scene, and the media sources inherit the mixer levels you set.

Licences

The clips on ViralMemesFX are free-licence audio and reviewed uploads. CC0 and public-domain sounds can be used on a monetised stream and in VODs with no credit. A CC BY sound needs a credit, which most streamers put in the channel’s about panel. Steer clear of song snippets and audio lifted from shows; those are what earn a muted VOD or a strike. The licence explainer covers the differences in plain language.

Once the board is set up, export your scene collection from Scene Collection, then Export, so you do not have to rebuild it after a reinstall.
