How to Make Your Own Meme Sound
Last updated 2026-09-16
The best meme sounds were made by someone with a phone and no plan. If you have a noise, a phrase or a recording that your friends keep asking for, turning it into a clean soundboard button takes about fifteen minutes with free tools. This guide covers recording, trimming, levelling and exporting, then how to upload it to ViralMemesFX so it works as a button for everyone.
What makes a sound work as a button
Before recording, it helps to know the target. Good soundboard clips share a few traits:
- Short. Reaction sounds land in under two seconds. Anything over five needs a reason. Uploads here are capped at thirty seconds, and Discord’s soundboard caps clips at a few seconds.
- Instant. No silence at the start. The button should sound the moment it is pressed.
- Loud and clean. Consistent volume, no background hum, no clipping.
- One idea. A single sting, a single phrase, a single noise. Two ideas is two clips.
Recording
A phone’s voice-memo app is fine for most meme sounds. A laptop mic works too. A few habits make a big difference:
- Record somewhere quiet with soft surfaces. A closet full of clothes is a better studio than an empty room.
- Hold the mic 15 to 20 centimetres from the source. Too close and you get pops and distortion; too far and you get room echo.
- Record three or four takes in one go. The second or third is usually the keeper.
- Leave a second of silence before and after; you will trim it, and it makes editing easier.
If you are recording a sound from an object rather than a voice (a squeaky door, a can opening, a slap on a table), get the mic closer than feels natural and do more takes. Foley is mostly repetition.
Trimming and cleaning up in Audacity
Audacity is free on Windows, macOS and Linux and does everything a meme sound needs.
- Import the recording, or record straight into Audacity.
- Select the best take and use Edit, then Remove Special, then Trim Audio to delete everything else.
- Zoom in on the start and delete any silence so the sound begins immediately. Leave the natural tail at the end; cutting it is what makes a clip sound cheap.
- If there is hum or hiss, select a bit of pure background, open Effect, then Noise Reduction, click Get Noise Profile, then select the whole clip and apply the effect with the default settings.
- Open Effect, then Normalize, and set the peak to minus 1 dB. This makes the clip as loud as it can be without clipping.
- Optionally add a fade of 50 to 100 milliseconds at the very end with Effect, then Fade Out, to avoid a click.
Play it back at a normal volume and then at a loud one. If it distorts when loud, the recording clipped and you need another take; normalising cannot fix distortion.
Exporting as MP3
- Choose File, then Export Audio.
- Pick MP3, set the bit rate to 128 or 192 kbps, and choose Mono unless the sound genuinely needs stereo. Mono halves the file size and plays the same on phones.
- Name the file after what it is. “door-squeak.mp3” will be found; “REC0042.mp3” will not.
The result should be well under a megabyte. Our upload limit is 5 MB and 30 seconds, and a normal reaction sound is a fraction of both.
Uploading it
- Open the upload page.
- Choose the MP3, give it a clear title, pick a category and add a few tags describing what it sounds like and what it is for.
- Confirm that you recorded it or have the right to share it. Uploads are published under a free licence so anyone can use them, and your name is shown on the sound page.
- Submit. A person reviews every upload before it goes live, usually within a day. Uploads are limited to a handful per day per person to keep the queue sane.
What gets rejected
Music, song snippets, clips from shows and films, other people’s TikToks, and anything a company owns. Also recordings of real people who did not agree to be recorded, and anything that is just noise or a duplicate of an existing sound. Everything else, from a perfect boing to a friend’s laugh, is welcome. Once it is live, it works as a button on the site, can be downloaded by anyone, and can be added to a Discord soundboard or an OBS hotkey like any other sound here.
