About cartoons sounds

Cartoon sound effects are the most exaggerated audio there is, and that is the point. A boing for a bounce, a slide whistle for a fall, a xylophone run for tiptoeing, a cymbal crash, a spring, a pop, a whistle for a double-take. These effects have been doing comedic work since the 1930s, and they still land instantly in a TikTok, a stream clip or a group chat.

This category is small today and grows through uploads. The classic studio effects are owned by the studios that made them, so we do not host those; what belongs here are free-licence and original recreations of the same style, released under CC0 or public-domain terms so anyone can use them in a video, a game or a call. The sound page for each clip lists where it came from and whether credit is required.

Cartoon effects are also the friendliest way to learn sound design in a video editor, because they are meant to be obvious. Put a boing exactly on the frame where the bounce happens and it works; put it three frames late and it does not. The editing guide walks through that timing. If you can record or synthesise these effects yourself, this guide shows how to make and export one, and uploads are welcome.
